Can we Awaken our Intuition?

July 25, 2011

Intuition, also called our "Sixth sense" has always been a fascinating topic to me but one that I have only recently started to explore and awaken in my own life.

So, what exactly is the meaning of intuition?
According to the Dictionary : "The ability to acquire knowledge without inference, or the use of reason"

The way I see intuition, is more like an inner guidance system, a light that illuminates our path and helps us find answers, for our life to unfold at its best.
You have probably heard common expressions that refer to this guidance, such as "having a hunch", "having a gut feeling", etc. they often relate to body sensations, because indeed, our intuition lives in our body and not our intellect, it is a sensation, an experience, not something we can necessarily explain with words, or process rationally.

Intuition is also called the Sixth Sense, because it is believed to be one more of our senses, just like sight, taste, hearing, etc. But because this sense is not "materially" obvious, like the other five are, societies tend to dismiss it, ignore it and, be afraid of it.
As a result, most people loose this ability by the time they are 12 or even earlier. We sadly become deprived of a basic guidance skill.

Throughout history, some people have been able to develop this sense in spite of the environment, often at great cost (persecution, isolation, etc.) Luckily, in our current time, even though prejudice still remains, there is no danger of persecution and punishment, and we can freely learn more about this incredible skill that is our birthright.

Growing up in a culture and a family that was fairly open to the concept of intuition and inner guidance, I met friends of my parents and family members that had this ability, and 99% of the cases they were right on spot. But at that time I just believed that "they" were uniquely gifted and had an ability that I did not.

It was not long ago that I came across a wonderful book, that is dear to my heart and that has taught me a lot on this subject, it is called: Diary of a Psychic: Shattering the Myths, by Sonia Choquette.

When we hear the word "Psychic" many of us imagine the weird looking lady with long nails and a crystal ball, there is still a lot of stigma and prejudice attached to it, and often with good reason, since there are a lot of impostors out there that claim to predict the future and rob people's money.

However, there are people just like you and me, that were lucky enough to develop their sixth sense and use it for the common good, this is the case with Sonia Choquette and many more that have lived before, like Edgar Cayce, another incredible individual that devoted his intuitive skills to help others.

But aside from reading and learning from these amazing people, it is important to realize that although we are not all meant to become Psychics, we all have the power to awaken our sixth sense, to awaken that guidance system that can greatly help us navigate life. It is still there, dormant, and we can find it again if we really want to! This was an exciting discovery for me, and I have put it into practice with good results, to my own astonishment!

If your are interested in learning more about your intuition and how to awaken it, I encourage you to take a little time and explore the subject, if you wish to do so, you can look into Sonia's numerous books, or just search on the topic, there is a lot of information out there.

Most of all you need to start from the firm belief that you DO have an inner guidance and you CAN reconnect to it.

Here are a couple little things to get you started:

  • Something you need to do to awaken your intuition is, again, quiet your mind (this keeps coming up!). It seems like our mind gets us into a lot of trouble, and if we are able to detach from it a little (to lower the power of its voice), we can see more clearly, we can reconnect with ourselves. So one of the most recommended practices to this end is meditation.
If you want to read a little more about it, I had a specific posting on Meditation a few months ago.
Also, the Summer 21-Day Meditation Challenge from the Chopra Center is coming up Aug. 15, I greatly encourage you to sign up, it is free! (see announcements below!)

  • Ask YES/NO questions to your heart.
This is a simple and fun exercise. When you have a doubt and need an answer, take a deep breath, and ask yourself a yes/no question and wait for an answer, do not THINK about it (that is the tricky part), just wait, look for the answer in your heart, not your head. If you get a clear answer, trust it, do not question it.
If this does not work for you yet, it may be because your mind chatter is still too loud for you to "hear", but do not despair, it takes a little time, but it works!!!
To close this post, I wanted to share an informal interview with Sonia: What is Intuition and How Can we Develop it.
Note: If you see little add windows, just close them once and they won't show again.

Have a great week!
