EFT: Emotional Freedom Technique

This week I would like to talk about EFT, which stands for: Emotional Freedom Technique.
EFT is also known as Meridian Tapping or just Tapping, and is a wonderful tool for improving our well-being.

EFT is a practice that combines eastern and western disciplines in order to balance the energy in our bodies, which in turn, will help us improve our physical and psychological state. For a more in depth description, I will quote EFT expert Carol Look:

"EFT is a form of psychological acupressure that uses a gentle tapping technique instead of needles to stimulate traditional Chinese acupuncture points. The tapping on the designated points on the face and body is combined with verbalizing the identified problem followed by a general affirmation phrase. These combination technique balances the energy system and appears to relieve psychological stress and physical pain. Restoring the balance of the energy system allows the body and mind to resume their natural healing abilities. EFT is safe, easy to apply, and is non-invasive."

I became interested in EFT when I was researching about the Law of Attraction, after working with Affirmations, Positive Thinking, Goal Setting, etc. I finally understood that none of these techniques work when there is an emotional opposition. In other words, if we are repeating positive affirmations but we are not feeling positive at all, the law of attraction does not work. If we envision ourselves in the life we want but deep inside we don't believe it can happen, it won't. Our subconsious mind knows when we are lying.

In order to manifest and attract good things into your life, first you have to become aware of the energy blockages you have that are not allowing you to move in the direction you want, then you can release that energy blockage and move on.

So, first we need to release negative energy in order to open up the channel for attracting better circumstances. As long as our minds and bodies present blockages to the outcome we want, we are boycotting ourselves (unknowingly) and we will most likely be stuck in our current circumstances.

Here is where EFT makes total sense to me, because it allows you to first CLEAR the blockages. EFT can help you heal your current discomfort, whether it is physical or psychological.

Here are some important tips I have learned while using EFT in my life.

  • The key to clear off negative energy in your body and in your life is to TAP with issues that are currently happening, things that are affecting you AS you tap, there is no point on using the technique on hypothetical issues or issues that have not yet happened, you have to be IN IT, you have to be feeling the discomfort, stress, etc, at the moment you use the technique.

  • You should be specific while describing the problem, for instance: I feel angry and betrayed because ... or I am sad because of..., however, sometimes we may feel discomfort but we may not know exactly why, when this is the case, use your body's sensations! our bodies usually know when something is off, so tune into your body and try to determine if there is a sensation somewhere that makes you a little uncomfortable, if you find for instance that you feel tension in your shoulders or a pit in your stomach, you can use that as the issue: "I feel this uncomfortable sensation in my stomach..." This will help you tap on the issue even if you don't consciously know what the issue is.

  • You have to take the time and do it until you feel relieved, depending on the issue, it may take 5, 10, 15 or more minutes and you may need to do it every day for a few weeks. Usually you rate your level of discomfort before you start, and after every round of tapping you rate it again, that will give you a sense of improvement, you should tap until the level of discomfort has gone down to "0" or at least close.

  • Do not get stuck on using the "perfect wording", the important thing is first to acknowledge the problem and then say you love/accept yourself (very important!), then you just keep tapping each point while saying a phrase that sums up the "issue", the wording can vary a lot, but it is important to speak the problem, say you accept yourself or the issue, and as you go on, you can add a positive affirmation towards the end of the tapping cycle.

In life we are exposed to many different kinds of events, people, circumstances, etc. that can throw our energy out of balance, as a result, our level of stress may raise, our mood may be affected and we may even experience physical discomfort. We can use EFT, on any issue that is bothering us, with wonderful results.
