Will You Do Your Part?

November 14th, 2011

When I look at the world on a large scale, I always try to see hope instead of despair. There are indeed many crisis going on in the world right now: crisis of values, financial crisis, social crisis, environmental crisis, you name it! but in spite of it all, I can't help but feel hope.

The fact that the world is reaching a critical point, should not scare us, it should empower us instead, because with any great challenge comes a great opportunity and I believe each one of us has now the opportunity to make a difference, we all have a role to play, a duty towards our planet, our fellow human beings and our own.

Here are some main points to think about:

Human Solidarity: think about what the world would be like if we moved from competition to cooperation, from greed to generosity, from fear to love and trust. If each one of us can make those shifts in our own lives, we can start changing the world.

Individual and Collective Responsibility: There is a wise native indian belief that says we always need to think seven generations ahead and decide whether the decisions we make today would benefit our children seven generations into the future. This is something we should all consider in the decisions we make.

The Planet: we need to understand that there is no way we can live in dominance of it, in fact, we can only survive by living in harmony with it. No matter how greedy and smart human beings can be, we will never, NEVER dominate this planet, the forces of nature have shown us that time and time again.

Other Species: human beings have long believed they hold the supremacy over every other species in the planet and that has led to horrible abuses and cruel behaviors towards animals. The fact that we aren't capable of communicating with other species doesn't mean they don't have their own intelligence and wisdom, we should respect every form of life in this planet, because it is great in its own right.

How can we make changes?, here are some ideas:

Don't focus on the problems
There are way too many problems in this world, and thinking of them will only discourage you, instead focus on the small things YOU can do, this shift in thinking is much more rewarding and in turn it pays off, because you can be an example to others, a model to follow for your children, your neighbors, coworkers, etc, and the more and more people start making small changes, the greater the impact will be on a larger scale.
The key is to believe that if you do your part, things will eventually shift, instead of thinking that there is no point on doing anything because the problems are way too many or because other people are not doing anything.

Practice kindness everyday
Be kind to people around you. If you can help somebody in any way (giving a smile, a hug, some time, support, etc), just do it, without giving it a second thought. It doesn't mind if you know them or not, and don't stop to think if they deserve it or not (this is not a judgment for you to do). Human Solidarity is a wonderful thing and it will give you a great sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Respect the earth you live in
Try to live in communion and harmony with this planet, you can do many little things to help the environment: Buy local and seasonal produce, use energy saving light bulbs, recycle your trash, etc. Every small change counts! Here are more easy ideas:

Respect other Species
I don't suggest you become a vegetarian today or stop buying leather, but think about what you consume, be an informed consumer and make small changes in your shopping habits. You can start by buying free range and/or organic chicken for instance. Always keep in mind that consumer choices, little by little, will shape the way big corporations operate, so send your message to the world by the things you consume or not consume.
