Scared of the Next Step?

January 18th, 2012

What happens when we are faced with choices and need to make important decisions that will change our lives?

The truth is, every single time we make a decision, we are letting go of something and embracing something new, a door closes and another one opens, there is a shift...and, this can be scary, especially when the new door opens up to something uncertain, unknown.

It is always hard to let go of what we know, because what we know gives us a sense of security. Like my father always says: "Every time you make a decision, you know what you loose but don't necessarily know what you will gain, if anything". But making a decision is part of taking risks, and taking risks is part of life, if we deny ourselves the privilege of choosing and taking risks, we are denying ourselves the magic of life.

"We will only understand the miracle of life fully when we allow the unexpected to happen"
-Paulo Coehlo-

Sometimes we may not even know we can make a decision, because we see no choices out of negative or unhappy situations, but we always have a choice, no matter the circumstances we are in. Oftentimes we can get stuck into thinking we don't... we can convince ourselves that we are trapped in a situation that makes us unhappy, and this is caused in part by being afraid of change.

The truth is: we DO have choices, we can always change our current circumstances. The problem is that sometimes, changing means throwing ourselves into the uncertain and that scares us to the point of choosing (sometimes unconsciously) to stay stuck in our "current" circumstance.

"Always do what you are afraid to do"
-Ralph Waldo Emerson-

It is better to try something and fail than to never have tried it. If we see failure as an opportunity to learn and grow, we should not fear failure. Whereas, regretting something we never tried and endlessly wondering what our life would have been if we DID, can consume us.

The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.
- Elbert Hubbard -

If you are connected with your intuition and your inner guidance system, or if you are a person of great faith, or unbeatable optimism, it might be easier for you to take risks, but even if you are not, even if taking them is hard for you, you should still take them, especially if you know you need a shift in any particular area of your life (your job, your marriage, your health, anything)!

Success is often the result of taking a misstep in the right direction
- Al Bernstein -

So, if there are things in your life that you are not happy about, open yourself to see the options, and trust that you always DO have options, even if they are not perfect, they are worth exploring!!! But whatever you do, don't give up because of fear of failure, that will take you nowhere!

Have a great week!
